Arts

At Montgomery Academy creativity doesn’t begin and end in just the art room. It spills into every other subject of the school making the learning experience into something quite unique for each individual student.

Traditional art subjects such as painting, drawing, sculpture, art history, or printmaking are combined with academic subjects such as social studies, math, and science. The possibilities in the classroom are endless. For example a student can create an abstract painting using geometric shapes or sculpt the anatomy of an animal as part of their life science project. This cross-curriculum method of teaching enhances the students’ cognitive and creative intelligences in an engaging and fun learning environment.

Our music program focuses on interdisciplinary methods with an assortment of projects designed to immerse students in various genres of Western and global music. By blending lessons with an array of multimedia resources, students are inspired to listen and gain a deeper appreciation of the music of different cultures. Music students are guided in improvisation and direct their own performances which foster a stronger sense of self worth and individual expression. Music and its interconnectedness to different disciplines and peoples is infused throughout Montgomery classrooms and its unifying power demonstrated through song, dance, instruments, and performance.

Our theatre program offers students an opportunity to gain knowledge of public speaking, acting, stage management, set design, creative writing, and character analysis. Students direct, create sets and perform in school productions. Original plays may also be written and produced by and for the school community. Students go to professional performances and workshop programs on field trips. Visits to the school from actors, performers and artists in residence enhance and enrich the drama and performing arts programs.

Most importantly, teachers of the performing arts provide a variety of creative opportunities which promote self-esteem, confidence, oral language, critical thinking, problem solving, communication, and collaboration.
